Being at the base of these stairs reminded me of the challenges we encounter when wanting to making changes in life. It can seem like making changes requires a long and difficult climb to the top and we’re often confronted with solid brick walls that hinder our progress.
The start of a new year is often a time of inspiration, because you think about whom and what is important in your life. Take a moment to think about this…..
Were your answers what you expected, or did you have some amazing discoveries? Having this knowledge and self-awareness is a very useful starting point, where you can decide where you want to make the changes that will bring you more happiness and success into your life.
Your attitude and how you approach change does significantly impact the journey of change that you experience. Dr. Carol Dweck, a psychologist and author, coined the terms “fixed mindset” and “growth mindset” to describe the underlying beliefs people have about learning and intelligence. A fixed mindset holds you back and prevents you from realising your full potential, while a growth mindset allows you to explore without being afraid of the challenges ahead. It’s a choice.
An effective way to make changes is for you to start small. Choosing to make a small change or two every week helps make it a habit, as a habit is a just a chosen behaviour practised repeatedly until it becomes automatic. As James Clear states in his book Atomic Habits – “The ultimate purpose of habits is to solve the problems of life with as little energy and effort as possible.” Sounds like a great philosophy to me!
This is how you build your bridge to get from where you are now to where you want to be. How your bridge looks is as individual as you. So, I encourage you to choose one or two changes or improvements from your top three priorities that you have identified and implement them each week. When you have mastered these small changes, choose another one or two and continue on your way to more success and happiness.
